Ride To The Moon with Jo Chan

Meet Jo, Sydney mother of two, part of the crew at To The Moon, a 2nd hand kids’ clothing exchange aaand, of course, a Lug+Carrie Good Mover from way back.

We caught up with Jo to chat about conquering her bike riding nerves, her favourite sustainable shopping spots to visit by eBike in Sydney, and a few exciting things happening at To The Moon!

Tell us a bit about yourself and To The Moon!

My name is Jo and I’m one of the co-owners of To The Moon, a kids’ secondhand clothing store in Sydney that I run with my friends Jess and Bec (here on Instagram). We’re all about giving great clothes another life — and making it easy (and stylish) for families to shop more sustainably. People can exchange clothes for store credit (or cash) and it’s so rewarding seeing the circular economy in action.

Before this, I spent years in advertising and the corporate world, but by far the hardest and most fun job I’ve had is being a mum of two.

You’ll usually find me going between kid pick-ups and drop offs, visiting our shop, hanging out at the markets and hitting up all the local playgrounds.

Tell us about your Good Mover journey…

I kept seeing Lug+Carrie bikes all around Sydney’s inner west and with having to drop two kids off in different locations we decided to book a test ride.

The kids loved it and it made the mornings so much more enjoyable for everyone. I hadn’t ridden a bike in Sydney before and was too nervous, so only my husband did for months. But, when my son started Kindy, the fear of having to deal with parking or walking an overtired child home was enough to force me into riding. To my surprise it was nowhere near as scary as I thought and I immediately loved it.

I still feel proud of myself every time I ride and we see our bike being our “second car”. We couldn’t go without it now.

What Lug+Carrie do you ride and what’s your favourite riding memory?

We have the Tern GSD and have loved being able to change the seat configurations for the kids over time. One of my favourite moments was the lightbulb that I could fit a travel pram on the bike!

As well as that, simply riding with the kids feels like making a memory. So in a way, making memories for them has been my favourite part too.

What’s your best piece of advice for others who might be nervous about riding and riding with passengers?

Live the advice you often give your kids! Be brave, try new things and keep trying.

The other thing I often tell people is that you already know your neighbourhood: where it’s busy, where you might need to be more careful, the best back streets to ride etc, so when you ride you’ll probably feel a bit more comfortable than you think.

Best outfit tips for riding and mumming?

Pockets, a helmet decorated with stickers you love and my podiatrist would like me to tell you, appropriate shoes!

What’re your favourite sustainable shopping spots around Sydney that you visit by Lug+Carrie?

I love Telma’s Responsibly Gorgeous stall at Marrickville Markets on Sundays. She has the best mix of designer, vintage and fun pieces (for adults) that you can shop all while eating gozalme and watching your kids on the jumping castle. I also love Reunion in Enmore because they are Gen Z cool and I am always inspired by how they style pieces.

Village Wholefoods in Marrickville is my favourite place for snacks and I’m lucky to be close to Reverse Garbage, a community organisation that gives all sorts of materials a second life. You’ll never know you’ll be walking out with old props, fabric, lego or old campaign posters.

You’re cooking up some exciting things at To The Moon, tell us a bit more about that…

We really are! In addition to our Summer Hill store we’re about to open our second To The Moon location in Erskineville in Sydney. It feels both surreal and exciting and we can’t wait to open later this month. If you’re in the neighbourhood (or a ride away) we’d love you to visit us!
