Lug+Carrie’s Tour de Hot Cross Bun

While some of you might be content with a 6 pack from Woollies, there’s nothing more tasty than an artisan hot cross bun. You wouldn’t dream of a bakery crawl by car but, by bike, you can roll up outside as many stops as your legs can take you. Taste test one at each stop, or buy a box and pop it in your panniers for a picnic later on.

We’ve planned out eBiking routes to visit some of Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney’s hot cross hotspots (all you need is the Strava app), or you could create your own closer to home.

Don’t forget to share your tasting notes in the Rider Network!

Brisbane

Sample some of Brisbane’s most delightful Hot Cross Buns around James Street and Newstead, then burn off the cals with a pedal around to New Farm Park!

An eBike route to visit a number of New Farm's top bakeries with Hot Cross Buns.

Route includes:

  1. Idle, New Farm – The highly anticipated new bakery and cafe from the creators of the cult-favourite Agnes Bakery. While the original Agnes Bakery closed its doors, the same amazing wood-fired baking spirit lives on here with phenomenal pastries and seasonal buns.
  2. Jocelyn’s Provisions, James Street – A Brisbane institution known for uncompromised quality. Their hot cross buns are perfectly spiced, heavily fruited, and made with top-tier natural ingredients.
  3. Nodo Donuts, Newstead – Famous for their “baked, not fried” treats, their gluten-free variations of Easter buns are a godsend for coeliacs and absolutely delicious for everyone else.
  4. Baker D. Chirico, Newstead – Melbourne’s iconic bakery recently opened its doors in Brisbane, bringing its immaculate French, German, and Italian-inspired baking mastery to their incredible hot cross buns.

A special mention goes to Cerin Pasticceria in Woolloongabba for their hot Italian take on an HCB – The Hot Cross Maritozzo. Oooh.

Visit the Lug+Carrie Brisbane Shop: If you happen to be picking up your Maritozzo in Woolloongabba, it’s just down the street from us! Pop into our Brisbane eBike shop to say hi, grab some tips on the best local cycling routes, or test ride a new set of wheels to help carry your bakery haul.

Sydney

Follow our route around Surry Hills – a great little pocket for HCB’s this Easter. Pack your picnic blanket and head to Centennial park afterwards, a perfect post-tour spot to do some taste testing.

An eBike route to visit a number of New Farm's top bakeries with Hot Cross Buns.

Route includes:

  1. Humble Bakery – From the team behind Porteño, they are famous for their pink finger buns but their hot cross buns are equally legendary, crafted fresh every morning.
  2. Lode Pies and Pastries – Offering boutique, beautifully laminated pastries, their elevated, flaky take on Easter treats is well worth the pitstop.
  3. Bourke Street Bakery – An absolute Sydney classic that consistently delivers one of the most reliable, perfectly spiced, and dense hot cross buns in the city.
  4. Messy Spoon – Perfect for the health-conscious rider, this spot offers incredible gluten-free and refined-sugar-free baked goods so you can indulge without the crash.

A special mention to Black Star Pastry in Newtown. They’ve rolled out a Blueberry Hot Cross Bun for a bit of a twist on the classic.

Visit the Lug+Carrie Sydney Shop: Black Star Pastry in Newtown is an easy little side trip from the Lug+Carrie Sydney eBike shop! If you’re out on an Easter ride, swing by to chat with our team, get a tune-up, or see how our subscription eBikes can completely change your daily commute.

Melbourne

Sample some of Melbourne’s boldest Easter buns around Fitzroy, then burn off a few cals with a pedal around Carlton Gardens.

Route includes:

  1. Babka Bakery – A Brunswick Street institution that has been perfecting European-style baking for decades. Their hot cross buns are known to draw a queue, and they are worth every minute.
  2. To be Frank – A fantastic local gem where the focus is on traditional techniques. Their masterful sourdough skills translate beautifully into their fluffy, flavourful Easter buns.
  3. Morning Market – Part bakery, part premium grocer by Trader House, this vibrant spot offers top-tier baked goods and the perfect specialty coffee pairing to fuel your ride.
  4. Bread Club – Famous for their wild, creative hot cross bun variations. From classic styles to cheesecake or twice-baked hot cross buns, this is a must-visit.
