You’re here because you’re already pedalling a Lug+Carrie, or you’re thinking about it but you’re worried about security. You’ve come to the right place.
eBikes are higher value than regular bikes so they definitely need a bit more security. Our goal is to make eBike security simple and stress-free, so you can park with confidence knowing your bike will be right where you left it.
Read on for our guide to locking up our Tern and Riese & Muller eBikes and keeping them safe.
Key Takeaways
- Different needs: eBikes are higher value than standard bikes, so they need more protection.
- Layered security: Our system relies on three key elements: a frame lock, a chain lock, and an alarm.
- Insurance included: For our subscribers, theft cover is included—provided you use all three locking methods. For more on safe storage, see here.
- Park smart: Choosing a safe spot to park is just as important as the locks you use.
How to Secure eBikes vs Non-Electric Bikes
Securing an electric bike is a bit different from locking up a standard pushbike. Because eBikes generally have a higher value and include components like batteries and displays, they can attract more attention. Knowing how to secure an eBike properly is all about using a system that protects the frame, the wheels, and the electronics together.
Elements of an eBike security system
A reliable eBike security system is really a team effort. We recommend using multiple layers of protection to keep your bike safe.
A note for our subscribers: One of the perks of subscribing to Lug+Carrie is that your lock and insurance are included in your subscription. To ensure you remain covered, you simply need to use the provided gear: the frame lock, chain lock, and alarm.
Here is the gear we use to keep your ride safe:
Frame locks
The frame lock is attached directly to your bike’s frame. It works by sliding a metal shackle through the front or rear wheel (depending on the eBike model), preventing it from spinning. It’s a great “immobiliser,” but for maximum security, it should always be used alongside a chain.
Cable locks and chain locks
This is your anchor. A heavy-duty bike chain lock connects your bike to a fixed object, like a bike rack. We rely on ABUS locking systems—specifically the ABUS Locking Chain 6KS—because they offer excellent protection. This is the quality gear provided to our subscribers, and it’s what we recommend for all eBike owners.
Alarm and trackers
All our eBikes are fitted with alarms that sound a siren if someone attempts to move your ride.
If you are purchasing a bike from us, many models also feature the Bosch Smart System built-in. This technology adds another layer of safety by allowing your smartphone to act as a digital key for the motor and battery. You can learn more about the Bosch Smart System here.

eBike security tips: 5 Steps for Locking and Parking Your eBike
Securing your eBike doesn’t have to be complicated. By following these five simple steps every trip, you can enjoy total peace of mind.
Step 1: Find safe eBike parking
Start by looking for a safe place to park. Ideally, you want a well-lit area with plenty of foot traffic. Look for a sturdy fixture to lock your bike to—like a cemented bike rack. We suggest avoiding wire fences or street signs, as these can sometimes be insecure or easily removed.

Step 2: Engage the frame lock
Locate the frame lock on your bike (usually above the front or rear wheel, depending on your model).
- Find the thumb lever on the side of the lock.
- Insert your key into the opposite side and twist it clockwise.
- While the key is twisted, slide the lever down until it clicks. The wheel is now fixed in place.

Step 3: Attach the cable lock or chain lock
Loop the chain lock around a fixed object like a bike rack, and then around the frame of your bike. We don’t recommend using street signs as the fixed object, because they are made to be pulled out of the ground, and a keen bicycle thief is well aware of this.
We also don’t recommend looping the lock around your front wheel, because if a thief removed the wheel, they could make off with the rest of the bike!
Pull the metal end of the chain through the loop end, and then attach the metal end to the housing of the frame lock. There is no separate key for the chain lock, it uses the same key as the frame lock. (which is handily the same key you use to remove the battery for charging).

Step 4: Turn on the alarm
The alarm on your bike functions with a fob, and works much the same way you lock your car. Press the round button and you’ll hear a beep, which tells you that the alarm is on. Excessive shaking or movement of the bike with the alarm activated will cause a loud alarm siren to sound. If you trigger the alarm by mistake, press the button which has the picture of the unlocked padlock and the alarm will turn off.
To turn the alarm off normally, simply press the button showing a picture of an unlocked padlock. You’ll hear a beep to let you know that the alarm is now off.
Step 5: Remove valuables and accessories
Before heading off, it’s good practice to remove loose items like helmets or bags.
What about the battery?
- For owners: If you have a secure spot to store it, taking the battery with you is a great theft deterrent as it lowers the bike’s value.
- For subscribers: Good news—you don’t need to carry the heavy battery around to be covered by insurance. Just ensure your locking system (frame, chain, and alarm) is engaged, and you are all set.
eBike Security Best Practices
Beyond the bike locks themselves, a few smart habits can help keep your eBike security tight.
Parking safely
Be mindful of where you leave your bike, even for short stops. Try to use indoor storage or personal garages overnight if possible. Be cautious with communal bike cages in apartment blocks or offices, as these can be targeted by thieves.
Invest in high-quality locking systems
We recommend investing in high-quality eBike locks, like the ABUS systems we use. They provide much stronger protection than standard locks and are well worth the investment for the security of your eBike.
Use multiple locking systems
Using all three layers—frame lock, chain lock, and alarm—is the most effective way to deter bike theft. The more barriers a thief faces, the more likely they are to move on. Reminder for subscribers: Using all three methods is required to keep your included insurance valid.
Register and Track
If you own your eBike, registering it with a database like BikeVault and noting down your serial number can be a huge help if your bike is ever taken. For extra peace of mind (if you don’t have a Bosch Smart System) the addition of a GPS tracker like an Apple Air Tag allows you to monitor your bike’s location in real-time.
In the unfortunate event that your bike is taken, acting fast is key.
- Report it: Contact the police immediately to file a report.
- Contact us: If you’re a Lug+Carrie subscriber, let us know straight away—we handle the insurance claim for you. If you own your bike, contact your insurer.
- Update status: If you have registered your bike on a database like BikeVault, log in and mark the bike as stolen. This alerts the community and helps police identify it if found.
- Ask for help from communities like The Lug+Carrie Rider Network or Cargo Bikes Australia who can keep an eye out for your eBike.
