Trying to take your dogs across the city in a car usually means fighting for a parking spot the second you get to the park, not to mention vacuuming pet hair out of the upholstery for daaaaysssss. It can be stressful, expensive, and…completely unnecessary.
Think about it: why use an expensive car just to take your dog three kilometres down the road?
Local cycling legend Josh Kwan recently grabbed a Lug+Carrie eBike and proved there is an infinitely better way to get your furry best friends around town. He skipped the gridlock and took his adorable Westies Ollie and Wilbur on a fun adventure over the Sydney Harbour Bridge to Pyrmont.
Watch the full video below to see exactly how he did it (and how much the dogs loved it).
Josh’s route & key takeaways
In his latest video, Josh swaps his usual road bike for a Lug+Carrie cargo eBike. He loads up his dogs and sets off with his wife Jess on a proper Sydney adventure.
- Exploring new parts of the city with his dogs – Josh and Jess love to explore the city on the weekends and take the dogs to new parks. On this adventure they ride over the Harbour Bridge to Pyrmont.
- Skipping tolls and parking headaches – Josh loves Pyrmont but it’s really tricky to get to so he’s never taken his dogs there. He says it feels too close to drive, there’s also a toll to get over the Sydney Harbour Bridge and parking is really bad once you get there. All of this is solved with his Lug+Carrie.
- Conquering hills (what hills?) Josh lives in a hilly area of Sydney which makes it difficult to pedal his dogs around on a push bike. The dogs’ combined weight of 23kg is no match for the Bosch motor on Josh’s Tern HSD.
- Doggos having the best time: The best part of the video? Watching Ollie and Wilbur soaking up the experience from the comfort of their cushy front row seat.
“One thing I love about cycling is how convenient it is. You don’t need to look for parking and you’re not governed by the roads. There’s also bike paths and little alleyways. And there’s so many places in Sydney that I never would have even been to if it wasn’t for the bike.” – Josh Kwan
How to set up your eBike for a dog
You don’t need to be a cycling pro like Josh to pull this off. Cargo eBikes have a million different accessories, which can be overwhelming. At Lug+Carrie, we’ve taken the guesswork out of riding with pets. We’ve curated the absolute best dog-friendly setups so you can skip the decision fatigue.
Depending on the size of your dog (or dogs!), here is how we build the perfect pet-hauler:
- The front & rear combo (like Josh’s set up!): Wondering exactly what Josh is riding in the video? He’s on the compact Tern HSD, with a Tern RuffHouse carrier on the front rack and a Tern Soft Crate + Tern Dog Roof Mini on the rear rack. This modular setup means both of his Westies get their own premium window seat without throwing off the balance of the eBike.
- The front row seat (Front Loaders): Got a medium-sized dog or a couple of small ones? A front-loader like the Riese & Müller Carrie features a large front bucket. Your dog sits right in front of you, soaking up the wind, while you keep an eye on them the whole time. An added bonus is you can carry a kid up to 22kg on the rear rack, too. (And yes, we have other front-loader options in our fleet if you need even more bucket space!)
- The rear deck (Long & Short Tails): If you prefer the feel of a regular bike or have less room to store an eBike, setting up the rear rack is the way to go. We have brilliant options across multiple price points: from the heavy-hauling Tern GSD and Quick Haul Long, to the Tern HSD and Quick Haul. We can set up the rear rack with a specialised dog basket or a padded enclosure so they are safe, secure, and ready to roll.
- Panniers & Trailers: Got a tiny terrier? Smaller dogs can comfortably ride in specialised pannier bags on the side of your eBike. Got a massive, 40kg golden retriever? We can hook up a dedicated dog trailer to the back of your eBike so they can ride in total luxury.
- Total Stability: Riding with a wiggly dog sounds sketchy, but it’s not. All these eBikes feature an ultra-low centre of gravity and powerful hydraulic disc brakes. This makes them very stable and safe to handle, even when your dog gets excited by a passing squirrel. Our custom dog carrying accessories (like the Tern Rough House and the Tern Soft Crate featured in this video) also come with built-in tethers that attach securely to your dog’s harness.

Take it home. Make it yours. (For 4 weeks)
Still wondering if your dog will actually thrive travelling by eBike? We get it. That’s exactly why we offer our flexible subscription—and as Josh points out in his video, it’s the ultimate try-before-you-buy experience.
“These bikes are not cheap and it’s not easy to know if it’s going to fit into your lifestyle. So having a way to rent the bike and try before you buy is fantastic. – Josh Kwan
With our subscription, there’s no lock-in contract. You can take a fully decked-out, dog-friendly eBike home and test it on your actual local routes for 4 weeks. Give it a proper, real-world beating. Once it’s parked in your garage and you realise you haven’t fought for parking at the dog park in a month, you won’t want to give it back.
But if your dog isn’t a fan? Swap it for a different eBike, or just cancel and hand it back. Easy.

Choose how you ride (and buy!)
While our flexible subscription is the easiest way to jump in, we give you total freedom to get your paws on the perfect setup:

“One part of the service that was really cool was [Lug+Carrie] delivered it to my front door. They had someone drop it off to me, show me exactly how to use the bike, all the little features, and help me get set up and going right off the bat.” – Josh Kwan.
